What You Need to Know

Australian vehicle inspection laws vary from state to state. Each state or territory sets regulations for vehicle inspections. All states and territories have some vehicle inspection requirements, either to be conducted periodically, before a transfer of ownership or both.

In NSW, your car is required to undergo inspection for safety certification, which must be completed either by an authorised dealer or an authorised automotive professional. You cannot register your vehicle annually without this. Depending on the age of your specific vehicle and registration compliance requirements, you will need either a Pink Slip eSafety Check or a Blue Slip Inspection. The Pink Slip eSafety Check is for cars that are five years and older, while a Blue Slip Inspection is for unregistered vehicles, vehicles with expired registrations for three months (or more) or vehicles registered outside of NSW.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a Pink Slip inspection check?

A Pink Slip inspection checks key safety components to make sure the vehicle is safe to drive and meets NSW requirements. This includes brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, indicators, windscreen and wipers, seatbelts and other essential systems. The inspection focuses on safety, not general mechanical condition, but issues like fluid leaks or worn components can still cause a fail if they affect safe operation.

  • What’s the difference between a Pink Slip and a Blue Slip?

A Pink Slip is an eSafety inspection usually required for renewing registration for vehicles over five years old. A Blue Slip is a more detailed inspection required when a vehicle is unregistered, has been written off and repaired, or is being registered in NSW for the first time from another state. Blue Slips generally involve additional identity and compliance checks, which makes them more thorough than a Pink Slip.

  • How can I prepare my car for a roadworthy inspection?

A simple way to prepare for a roadworthy inspection is to check the basics first, including tyres (tread and condition), all lights and indicators, windscreen condition, wipers and washer fluid, and that your brakes feel responsive. It’s also worth checking for obvious leaks, unusual noises and warning lights on the dash. If you’re unsure, a pre-inspection check can help identify common issues early, which can save time and prevent a failed inspection.
